Clan Donald

Clan Chief of Clan MacDonald

Donald Lord of the Isles --- Donald Mor McRanald

Son of Ragnald -

Son of Somerled

Somerled Macgilbred, Somhairle or in Norse Sumarlidi Höld ('Somerled' means "summer wanderer", the name given to the Vikings). He took the title ri Innse Gall (King of the Hebrides) as well as King of Man

The designation Lord of the Isles (Scottish Gaelic: Triath nan Eilean or Rí Innse Gall), now a Scottish title of nobility, emerged from a series of hybrid Viking/Gaelic rulers of the west coast and islands of Scotland in the Middle Ages, who wielded sea-power with fleets of galleys. Although at times nominal vassals of the King of Norway and/or of the King of Scotland, the island chiefs remained functionally independent for many centuries. Their territory included the Hebrides, (Skye and Ross from 1438), Knoydart, Ardnamurchan, and the Kintyre peninsula. At their height they were the greatest landowners and most powerful Lords in the British Isles following the Kings of England and Scotland.

Clan Gunn Crest

The Septs of Clan Gunn - which belong?

"By far the vast majority of septs of clan Gunn are from descendants of George "the Crowner" (or Coroner of Caithness).

The Crowner who lived in the 15th century had many sons before his death at the hands of the Keiths at St. Tayres. A prominent line from the Crowner's son James was the patronymic Mac Sheumais-Chataich (MacJames, Jameson of Caithness). After the Battle of St. Tears (Tayres) the Gunn's gave up their castle at Clythe. It passed first to William, Earl of Caithness (a Sinclair), then to the Keiths, much to the dismay of the Gunns."

The Four Main Branches of Clan Gunn

"The Crowners sons James, William and Henry went to Sutherland (largely the MacHamish Gunns) -- out of reach of the Earls of Caithness -- and settled in Strathullie. A second (possibly the largest) segment of the Gunns continued to inhabit the highlands (with a small "h") of Caithness (The Robson Gunns or Gunns of Braemore), centering on Braemore and Latheron. Some of this Ilk took up residence in a desperate border area betwixt the Sinclairs and the MacKays (the Aberach Mackays), the latter being their deadly rivals, in Strathy and Strath Halladale.

A third branch of Gunns became the Bregaul Gunns of Dale (the sons of John), and a fourth branch of Gunns was later to become the Henderson Gunns of the Caithness lowlands. They held lands in Halkirk and Westerdale."

Part II - The Original Septs of Clan Gunn

3) Johnson, MacIan
"Sons of John, also slain by the Keiths at St. Tears. Also from the Caithness area, they became the Gunns of Bregaul of Dale (Easterdale).

It is also necessary to mention that 'son of John' - Johnson - can be found all over Britain as this is and was a very common name. Not all surnames of Johnson are of the Clan Gunn.

John was also killed at St. Tears but his son William of Cattaig, held lands near Dirlot, the Dale, Dalemore and Bregaul. They are the third of the branches, known as the Gunns of Bregaul or Dale. They also had lands in the Strathmore area."
