St Brendan's Isle

Or: Who Really Discovered America?

http://www.castletown.com/brendan.htm

More conclusive evidence of Irish exploration of North America has come to the fore in West Virginia. There, stone carvings have been discovered that have been dated between 500 and 1000 A.D. Analysis by archaeologist Dr. Robert Pyle and a leading language expert Dr. Barry Fell indicate that they are written in Old Irish using the Ogham alphabet. According to Dr. Fell, the “West Virginia Ogham texts are the oldest Ogham inscriptions from anywhere in the world. They exhibit the grammar and vocabulary of Old Irish in a manner previously unknown in such early rock-cut inscriptions in any Celtic language.” Dr. Fell goes on to speculate that, “It seems possible that the scribes that cut the West Virginia inscriptions may have been Irish missionaries in the wake of Brendan’s voyage, for these inscriptions are Christian. The early Christian symbols of piety, such as the various Chi-Rho monograms (Name of Christ) and the Dextra Dei (Right Hand of God) appear at the sites together with the Ogham texts.”

The lack of any written account of this exploration could be explained by the explorers not being able to return to their homeland. If they indeed did reach what is now West Virginia, it would be extremely doubtful that they could manage to return to Ireland from a embarkation point that far south. The design of their currach required favorable winds and currents in the right direction in order to navigate. Severin discovered that it was extremely difficult to tack as other sailing ships were able to do. Perhaps that is the reason that it took Brendan seven years for his journey.

We can conclude that the voyage of St.Brendan was not a mere medieval fantasy but a highly plausible tale. These were special men. They sought the lands beyond the horizon, the wondrous realms to be revealed by God—the Promised Lands.

Saint Brendan the Navigator

"On the 3200-foot high summit of Mount Brandon are the ruins of a small beehive-shaped chapel commanding views of up to 100 miles in distance. There, it is said, the saint had a vision of the Promised Land. (There are, incidentally, many recorded accounts of the sighting of an island, a mirage usually identified as the fabled Hy-Brasil, off the west coast of Ireland.) Brendan's first attempt to sail to the Promised Land was apparently unsuccessful, but he was not discouraged. He and his crew of monks prayed and fasted for forty days, and set off on a second voyage which lasted seven years and probably took them to Iceland, Greenland and even the American mainland."

Irish Monks and the Voyage of St. Brendan

http://www.heritage.nf.ca/exploration/brendan.html

"The case that can be made for trans-Atlantic voyages by medieval Irish monks is a reasonable one. We know that Ireland was the centre for a vigorous culture during the fifth and sixth centuries CE, preserving Christian civilization in Northern Europe after the decline and collapse of the Roman Empire. During this period, Irish monks ventured out into the North Atlantic in pursuit of some kind of spiritual or divine mission. They reached the Hebrides, Orkneys, and Faeroe Islands. The Norse sagas suggest that Irish monks were even in Iceland when the Norse settled there after about 870 CE (though no archaeological evidence has yet confirmed this).

Such accomplishments add authenticity to the story of St. Brendan, who was born in Ireland about 489 and founded a monastery at Clonfert, Galway. According to legend, he was in his seventies when he and 17 other monks set out on a westward voyage in a curragh, a wood-framed boat covered in sewn ox-hides. The monks sailed about the North Atlantic for seven years, according to details set down in the Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis in the tenth century."

Saint Brendan

http://www.monasticireland.com/storiesofsaints/brendan.htm

"Between the creatures of the deep and the birds of the air, this is an incident-packed two years for the sailors, illustrating all the perils and bounty of nature. It is a fantastic voyage.

Finally, Brendan comes to his Land of Promise, the heavenly state so long desired. It is remembered afterwards as a "region of Paradise, where will be found health without sickness, pleasure without contention, attendance of angels, meadows in scent as fair blessed flowers". Blissful indeed, but not intended as a permanent resting place for one on this side of eternity. Having thus tasted nirvana, Brendan knows he must return to land and complete his mission in the world."

"His first stop-off on his return is at Aran, where Enda and Pupa are overjoyed to receive him and his crew. Brendan and company stay here a month, recovering from their time at sea, before sailing down to Inis da Droma near Limerick.

Back on land, Brendan dedicates himself to the foundation of monasteries. He travels to Britain, establishing religious houses in parts of Scotland and Wales. Returning home once more, he founds monasteries in Clare and Mayo, at Ardfert in Kerry, and most famously, at Clonfert in Galway, in 577AD. Brendan decides on Clonfert as his resting place."

The Culdee Church

Author: Isabel Hill Elder

A study of Druidism - their origin, teaching, and government and their religious beliefs that prepared Britain to receive apostolic Christianity that arrived in Britain shortly after the Ascension of Our Lord.

Just a few of the questions asked and answered by Mrs. Elder in this, her fourth edition of this splendid book, are...which is the first Christian Church outside Jerusalem? Who took Christianity to the Isles? Who were the Druids and what did they teach? Who built the roads for the Roman chariots?

In this most important work, she dispels the erroneous belief that Britian was uncivilized compared with Rome and that the Druids were a mischievous sect. The work and teachings of
this early British Church (Culdee) for 1100 years is detailed in this remarkable book. Although declared heretical by Rome in A.D. 705, the Culdee Church struggled on as distinct from the Romans until it was eclipsed by the Roman Catholic Church in the 12th century.

Mrs. Elder states what is little known but of the greatest importance...
the fact that Christianity, as a Church, was born in England before anywhere else, and that England was a professed Christian country one hundred years before Rome and, in fact, when Rome was still persecuting Christians.

She draws attention to the singular change, without any opposition, from Druidism to Christianity, which was understandable in that fundamentally they had no great difference in belief. An interesting point is also made as to the difference between
the British Church and the Church of England.

The rise and establishment of Christianity in Britian has been dealt with by many writers but in these pages new light has been thrown on the origin of the Culdees, with whom rests the introduction and, with their successors, the defense of the Apostolic Christianity brought by those early Christians to Britian shortly after the Ascension of our Lord.

The Celtic Church

The Celtic Church refused to acknowledge the primacy of the Pope!

That is a documented fact of history!

The recorded writings of Ancient & Modern Historians note this fact!

[Quote] The Culdee Church flourished for many

centuries, independent of Rome, and knew no

supremacy of the Bishop of Rome, held no dogmas

concerning the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin

Mary nor the "Infallibility of the Pope". In short, it was

far from being a "Roman Church." [End of Quote]

Andrew Gray D.D. from his book entitled -

THE ORIGIN and EARLY HISTORY of CHRISTIANITY IN BRITAIN

A Little Book of Celtic Saints

When the Roman Empire collapsed, it was the Celtic Church which kept the flame of Christianity burning. This little book tells this story of those missionaries who, throughout the sixth and seventh centuries, travelled throughout Europe in their battle against paganism.

The Real Saint Patrick
By: Pastor Alan Campbell

Pastor Alan shows from Patrick's own writings in his "Confession" that he had had a genuine salvation experience and was totally Christ-centred in his outlook - as is also evidenced by his hymn, known as "Patrick's Breastplate". The Papacy has tried to claim that it sent Patrick on his mission to Ireland but there is no mention of this by Patrick - not surprisingly! - nor, indeed, by the reigning Pope of the time. Patrick, as the Apostle of the primitive Celtic, Culdee Church knew nothing of Popes, Cardinals, Masses, Purgatory the Immaculate Conception or Bodily Assumption of the Virgin Mary - he was a true Bible Christian! In fact, this Apostle so inspired missionary zeal that from Ireland, "land of saints and scholars", teams of missionaries set out for the British mainland and even travelled as far as Switzerland.

Ancient Israelites in North America!

Author: Steven M. Collins

The worldwide scope of Israelite/Phoenician Empire! This book offers readers the truth about the extensive navigational and maritime skills of the ancient Israelites and Phoenicians, and reveals their worldwide reach. They established a network of colonies throughout the Mediterranean Sea, in Western Europe, the British Isles and North America. Considerable new evidence is offered to document the extent to which they explored North America in search for metals and raw materials to meet the need for Solomon's Temple and other building projects.

Israel and Judah became two separate and often-hostile kingdoms after the United Kingdom of Israel fell apart during a very bloody civil war. The Kingdom of Israel gradually degenerated as a nation as they disobeyed God, but remained a dominant naval power. The drought in Elijah's time stimulated the waves of Israelite migrations from their homeland and they founded new colonies for their people, including Kirjath-Hade-shath (identified in modern texts by its Roman name: "Carthage").

Simultaneous with the rise of Carthage to power in the mediterranean world, another new power rose to prominence in Asia. This new power was Scythia, and its tribes were named Sacae. The term "Sacae" preserves the name of the Hebrew Patriarch, Isaac, fulfilling God's promise in Genesis 21:12 that Isaac's name would be placed on Abraham's "birthright" descendants. Scythia's Israelite origin is extensively documented. The names of many Israelite tribes and clans are present and identifiable among the Sacae tribes. The Scythians also renamed all of the rivers emptying into the Black Sea, giving each one a name based on the name of the Israelite tribe of Dan.

CARMINA GADELICA

Ortha nan Gaidheal

INTRODUCTION

"This work consists of old lore collected during the last forty-four years. It forms a small part of a large mass of oral literature written down from the recital of men and women throughout the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, from Arran to Caithness, from Perth to St Kilda.

The greater portion of the collection has been made in the Western Isles, variously called 'Eileana Bride,' Hebrid Isles, Outer Hebrides, Outer Isles, 'Eilean Fada,' 'Innis Fada,'Long Island, and anciently 'Iniscead,' 'Innis Cat.' Isle of the Cat, Isle of the Catey. Probably the Catey were the people who gave the name 'Cataibh,' Cat Country, to Sutherland, and 'Caitnis,' Cat Ness, to Caithness.

The Long Island is composed of a series of islands, separately known as Barra, South Uist, Benbecula, North Uist, and Harris and Lewis. This chain is one hundred and nineteen miles in length, varying from a few yards to twenty-five miles in width. Viewed from the summit of its highest link, the Long Island chain resembles a huge artificial kite stretched along the green Atlantic Ocean, Lewis forming the body, the disjointed tail trending away in the blue haze and terminating in Bearnarey of Barra. This long series of islands is evidently the backbone of a large island, perhaps of a great continent, that extended westward beyond the Isle of the Nuns, beyond the Isle of the Monks, beyond the Isle of St Flann, beyond the Isle of St Kilda, beyond the Isle of Rockal, .......

.......

Three sacrifices have been made - the sacrifice of time, the sacrifice of toil, and the sacrifice of means. These I do not regret. I have three regrets - that I had not been earlier collecting, that I have not been more diligent in collecting, and that I am not better qualified to treat what I have collected.

These notes and poems have been an education to me. And so have been the men and women reciters from whose dictation I wrote them down. They are almost all dead now, leaving no successors. With reverent hand and grateful heart I place this stone upon the cairn of those who composed and of those who transmitted the work."

RUNE BEFORE PRAYER

I am bending my knee
In the eye of the Father who created me,
In the eye of the Son who purchased me,
In the eye of the Spirit who cleansed me,
In friendship and affection.
Through Thine own Anointed One, O God,
Bestow upon us fullness in our need,
Love towards God,
The affection of God,
The smile of God,
The wisdom of God.
The grace of God,
The fear of God,
And the will of God
To do on the world of the Three,
As angels and saints
Do in heaven;
Each shade and light,
Each day and night,
Each time in kindness,
Give Thou us Thy Spirit.

RANN ROMH URNUIGH

"OLD people in the Isles sing this or some other short hymn before prayer. Sometimes the hymn and the prayer are intoned in low tremulous unmeasured cadences like the moving and moaning, the soughing and the sighing, of the ever-murmuring sea on their own wild shores.

They generally retire to a closet, to an out-house, to the lee of a knoll, or to the shelter of a dell, that they may not be seen nor heard of men. I have known men and women of eighty, ninety, and a hundred years of age continue the practice of their lives in going from one to two miles to the seashore to join their voices with the voicing of the waves and their praises with the praises of the ceaseless sea."
