Log Cabin or Log Home

There is a big difference between a Log Cabin and a Log Home.  At some point in your life a Log Cabin may be your only home, but if it is a true Cabin it will be rather small compared to the average American Home.  Also remember that if built in a location with sufficient space a Log Cabin can be expanded by adding on additional rooms and thereby turned into a Log Home.  One way to accomplish this is to build a small Log Cabin first and then when time permits build a second small log cabin next to it and roof over the area in-between to create a 'fox-trot' or 'American Saddle-bags Log Cabin'.  As a general rule of thumb keep your Cabins small.  Ten by fourteen feet on the inside measurements is a good size for two pioneers or a husband and wife.  This is a comfortable and easily built size, and can be added onto later if time and need arises.  If simply a part time camp and a true hide-away it can be built even smaller.  If for a family with children you will need to build an additional room as soon as possible.    For a 10 foot by 14 foot Log Cabin you will need Logs cut 13 foot and Logs cut 17 foot long, averaging about 1 foot in diameter at the stump end of the log.  This gives you an average of 3 feet for where the logs overlap in a saddle joint, or 18 inches at each end of the log.
