The Skull and Cross Bones
The common use of the Skull & Cross Bones as a Christian military symbol began during the times of the Crusades. Most people associate the symbol only with death, danger and evil. The true meaning of the ancient symbol is far more complex, and to correctly understand it we must think like a Christian Knight.
The awesome Skull & Cross Bones emblem was first used by the Christian Crusader Knights Templar; a military and religious Order of grand significance in the annals of Western Christendom. The meaning of the symbol is complex and multi-layered, but primarily two-fold. We must keep in mind that the true meaning of a symbol is the meaning attached to it by those who design and display it; not that meaning which is attributed to it by the enemies of its originators. In this sense the Skull and Cross Bones emblem is much like the Confederate Battle flag. In that is has noble and honorable symbolism, yet is commonly misunderstood and hated by those ignorant of it’s true meaning, or antagonistic towards ‘the Cause’ of those who display it. This is an ancient symbol, dating back to the Crusader Knights, and now the ORION Knights of the Ku Klux Klan have chosen to adopt it as a central part of the ORION Knights Coat of Arms. There is good reason for this chosen symbol!
Allow me to underscore that the symbol has two fundamental meanings. These two meanings are opposites, and to the simple minded would appear to contradict each other. The two meanings actually compliment and balance one another, and weld the Skull and Cross Bones into a powerful and impressive symbol.
First there is the symbolism of what the Skull and Cross Bones means to the Christian Knights and their allies; secondly there is the symbolism of what it means to the enemies of Christendom! These two meanings are simple and straight forward.
To the Christian Knight, the Skull symbolizes Golgotha, the Place of the Skull; the hill outside of Jerusalem upon which Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior was crucified. I repeat the Skull symbolizes Golgotha, the Place of the Skull, known in Christendom as Calvary; the site of the Crucifixion, where the blood of Christ Jesus was shed as the sacrifice for our sins. This would make the Skull alone a powerful Christian symbol, yet they added to it the Cross Bones or Bone Cross. Jesus Christ was crucified on a Cross at the Place of the Skull. It is hard to get a simpler more direct symbolism than the Knights Templar designed when they hoisted the banner of the Skull and Cross Bones. The Cross of the Crossbones it not what most think of as the traditional Christian Cross; rather it is in the form of the Saint Andrews Cross, the Ancient Saltier of Scotland and Ireland. This Saint Andrews Cross has been a traditional symbol of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ since very early times and was most certainly used in the more traditional form on the Crusader Knights shields and banners, coats of arms, etc. This is the same Saint Andrews Cross that adorns the flag of Scotland and the Confederate Battle flag of America. The Templar Knights simply fashioned a Saint Andrews Cross out of leg bones to compliment the Skull. Thus the Cross Bones symbolize the ole rugged cross upon which our Savior shed His blood and died, the sacrificial Lamb of God. Therefore the Skull and Cross Bones truly symbolizes the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the same way that the crucifix does to a Catholic, or a simple cross does to a protestant. Now you know what the meaning of the Skull and Cross Bones to a Christian Knight, at least now you know part of the meaning. Alas there is more.
To the enemies of Christendom the Skull and Cross Bones when displayed by Christian Knights is a simple, bold and defiant warning. The Skull and Cross Bones emblem shouts the battle cry to our enemies, “Warning, Danger, Destruction and Death!” The military and religious Orders of Christian Knighthood are the swift and terrible bearers of danger, destruction and death to the enemies of Christ, and the enemies of Western Christendom. The Templar Knights chose the emblem wisely, as a banner to instill terror into the hearts of their enemies and as fair warning to all who dared to oppose them in the Holy Crusade upon which they were embarked. No idle threat! The Lord our God, the Holy One of Israel fights for His people!
34 Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
DEUTERONOMY 4: 34 HOLY BIBLE (King James Version)
15 And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your should abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant;
16 I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it,
17 And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.
18 And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.
LEVITICUS 26: 15 – 18 HOLY BIBLE (King James Version)
Therefore the ORION Knights of the Ku Klux Klan can display with pride and honor the new symbol of our Christian Order of Knighthood and Chivalry. The Coat of Arms of ORION KNIGHTS is a majestic emblem symbolizing our Faith in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior on the one hand, and warning our enemies of the soon to come danger, death, destruction and terror, on the other hand!
