Swiss Light Bicycle Infantry for Mountain Warfare

"Caidin/Barbree's otherwise flawless book, "Bicycles in War" doesn't cover the Swiss bicycle regiments which would have been the most compelling case to end their book with. This video goes a long way towards showing how a modern Light Bicycle Infantry (LBI) could be. Then Major Stephen Tate's CGSC Master's Thesis goes into greater details as he explains their mobility options as either a 30 mile sprint in a couple hours or 100 miles in a day. Tate rightly called for U.S. Army Light infantry to be fully ATB-mobile to have organic mobility and not just be foot sloggers without adding to strategic USAF airlift sorties." -- dynmicpara

Human Powered Vehicles in Support of Light Infantry Operations

The study concludes that equipping U.S. light infantry units with the bicycle would significantly improve their tactical mobility, yet allow them to retain their present force design.

Abstract : This study examines the suitability of using bicycles to enhance the mobility of U.S. light infantry units. Initially the study defines mobility problems encountered by U.S. light infantry units as a result of force design. The study presents historical examples of previous military cycling operations at the turn of the century, during both World Wars, and the Vietnam Conflict. The tactical use, mobility, speed, distance, and load carrying capacity of bicycle troops during each of these periods are discussed. The present use of three bicycle regiments in the Swiss Army is examined. The impact of recent technological improvements in the bicycle industry is examined for possible military application. Keywords: Bicycle; Light infantry; All-terrain bicycle, Mobility; Soldier's load; Vietnam, Swiss army; Strategy; Tactics; Derailleur; World War II; Logistics; Military operations.

"German BICYCLE Cavalry"

Towards the end of the war the bicycle replaced the horse to an increasing extent in organic German infantry reconnaissance units.  In addition Bicycle combat units were often an integral part of Horse Cavalry formations.  The Waffen SS 8th. Division Florian Geyer Horse Cavalry contained some large units of Bicycle Cavalry!

Waffen SS Cavalry is another unique QuikManeuvers.com publication, which includes a wealth of material and combat analysis found nowhere else. The organization, training, combat methods, and blood drenched battles of Waffen SS Cavalry are described in a manner that will capture the attention of any reader. The rich history of Waffen SS Cavalry is recounted from the pre-war years through the final days of the Third Reich. Every one of the SS Cavalry brigades and divisions fought on the Eastern Front. It was there in the open steppes, tangled primeval forests, and burning cities such as Budapest that Waffen SS Cavalry troops displayed the valor and steadfast combat resolve that was expected of the Waffen SS elite. But the Waffen SS Cavalry was more than that. They were capable of
transitioning from close combat to rapid deep penetration much quicker than pursuing SS infantry. Suddenly, Waffen SS troops clinging to the steel hulls of assault guns would crash forward, in a crescendo of fire and death. Fanning out to a flank and seeing through the smoke dimly, would be Waffen SS horsemen, racing to intercept the retreating enemy before they had time to control their panic and dig in. Their advance was made more terrifying by the howls of the Waffen SS Cavalry Hound Detachment. If the enemy did stop, the Waffen SS Cavalry would loop around them in a wide enveloping maneuver. As the half-drunk, fear crazed communist infantry trembled in the dirt; the message that the war would soon be over for them was broadcast bye the thundering hoofbeats of Waffen SS cavalry.

“In September 1944, two battalion-sized units of the 8th SS Cavalry Division practically wiped out a division of the turncoat 4th Rumanian Army which was then subordinated to the 27th Soviet Army. The German cavalrymen were dug in
on heights 463 and 495 which constituted a battleground that was to become known as Bloody Hill, east of Budapest, Hungary.
In spite of the fact that the German cavalry was well dug-in with many machine guns as well as artillery and Stuka dive bomber support, the Soviets ordered the reluctant Rumanian 9th Infantry Division to make a direct assault. For the frontal attack the Rumanians were supported by two heavy artillery regiments, six 120mm mortar companies, and five other artillery battalions.
When the Rumanians sent a single infantry battalion forward on September 22, it was met by German machine gun grazing fire, an artillery barrage and a Stuka attack. Not surprisingly, the German defensive fire slaughtered the Rumanian battalion. The Rumanian corpses lay in piles and bloody lines across the battlefield. The highly lethal German MG42 had scythed them down like so many rows of ripe wheat.
On the 23rd, the Rumanians threw in two fresh infantry battalions and that night an entire Rumanian infantry regiment prepared for a daylight assault. On the 24th, several Rumanian battalions attacked the German held heights after a two
hour artillery barrage by over 200 Soviet and Rumanian artillery pieces.
During the 24th and 25th of September, fierce attacks and counter attacks took place around Height 463. The Rumanians broke into the German trenches several times, only to be rapidly ejected by fierce German counter attacks. On the 26th Of September the 3rd Battalion of the Rumanian 36th Infantry Regiment took Height 463 and later that day the 3rd Battalion of the Rumanian 34th Infantry Regiment took Height 495. Although the Germans continued to counterattack until nightfall, the Rumanians held on. Bloody Hill cost the Rumanian 9th Infantry Division 531 dead and 3757 wounded and missing. Total Rumanian losses in the combat area were over 7,000 men.”

Waffen SS Cavalry by Breaker McCoy

WAFFEN SS CAVALRY

A REVIEW OF THE BOOK BY AVMC COMMANDER JOE JOHNSON

This book is one of the tops on the subject of the Waffen SS Horse Cavalry. It covers all aspects of this famous branch of the glorious Waffen SS fighting elite: the Horse Cavalry, including the Bicycle and Mechanized troops attached to the Waffen SS Horse Cavalry Divisions. Also the attached Horse Artillery is well covered. The importance of dismounted actions are not overlooked! The illustrations and photographs are fine and really bring this book to life. I'm eager to read and study more military books written by Breaker McCoy. It is really good work that Breaker and the QuikManeuvers staff has done by writing these books and making them available to soldiers, Military historians and the public!

It is refreshing to read about World War II without having to wade through pro-Communist multicultural Politically Correct hogwash. This book is totally devoid of the typical anti-Nazi venom and propaganda so common in most books about World War II. Another great plus about this book and others by Breaker McCoy is that they are written by a Military historian, tactician, and strategist who firmly understands that Horse Cavalry still has an important role to play in modern warfare! Those who think the days of Horse Cavalry ended with World War I are in for quite a surprise. This book is a good ride over bullet riddled, blood soaked battle grounds where some of the Aryan knights of World War II gained honor and glory in a hard fought struggle to defend Western Christendom from Communism!

This book was well researched, and its extensive bibliography will be appreciated by any true student of Military Science and Military History. Any true knight and combat cavalryman who takes the time and effort to read and study this book will be richly rewarded with time well spent and an increased knowledge of how to use Horse Cavalry in modern warfare. These lessons need to be learned and remembered.

Breaker McCoy, your work is greatly appreciated; you have written a fine book on the Waffen SS Cavalry.
