WORLD WAR II - LOUISIANA MANEUVERS

Battlefield of Louisiana

http://www.beau.org/~velmer/local/ww2.html

The Louisiana Maneuvers (August - September 1941) were the prelude to the greatest war the world has ever seen, World War II, and led to the birth of Camp Polk. The maneuvers were called the "Big One" because it involved upwards of a half million men engaged in simulated combat. It included 19 Divisions and was the largest such military exercise ever held on the US Continent.

This maneuver was not without casualties with 26 men documented as losing their lives in our area. First recorded casualty was a soldier struck and killed by lightening. Sabine River was the scene of several drownings. There were casualties from motorcycle wrecks and vehicle accidents. Records reveal that one soldier succumbed to a heart attack at age 24. All in all, a very small percentage of men lost their lives when one considers the magnitude of the military exercise.

Louisiana was the proving ground for the coming age of mechanism, tanks against the horse cavalry. It also tested how the horse cavalry could cope on this "Modern" battlefield. Each morning, sick call was held for the horses as well as for the men.

Cavalry Tactics

For much of history humans have used some form of cavalry for war. Cavalry tactics have evolved over time. Tactically, the main advantages of cavalry over infantry troops were greater mobility, bigger impact and a higher position.

Cavalry in modern warfare

Main article: Horses in the military today

Today soldiers (for example United States Special Operations Forces) still use horses for means of transport in remote areas such as the mountain regions in Afghanistan.

Horses in Warfare

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_horse

Horses have been used in human warfare for millennia, probably since the time of domestication of the horse. Horses were specially trained for a variety of military uses, including battle, individual combat, reconnaissance (scouting), transport, and supply. Technically, the term war horse usually refers in general to horses used for fighting, whether as cavalry in battle or in individual combat. The best-known war horse was the destrier, ridden by the knight of the Middle Ages. However, even horses used for purposes other than direct combat played a critically important part of successful military ventures. There are still some uses for horses in the military even in today's modern world.

FORUM QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ON COMBAT CAVALRY

"Are there any countries that maintain horse mounted cavalry units for combat purposes? I am aware of the Household Cavalry in the British Army or Presidential Bodyguard in the Indian Army but im talking combat oriented rather then ceremonial."

"Before the US pulled out of the Phillipines the US Military used horse mounted patrols to guard against rebel inflitration."

"Yeah I believe it's not unusual for Armies in Jungle and mountain areas to use mules and other pack animals, I think some of the equipment used by Brazilian Jungle Warfare Troops has been designed to be broken down and carried by pack animals."

"Thanks guys; I looked around some of my books and I found some interesting info:

- the Mexican Army maintained horse mounted cavalry for combat purposes until the early 1990s when the last horse cavalry were converted to armored forces except for 1 squadron for ceremonial duties.

- the Swiss Army had a horse mounted dragoon regiment until 1973.

- The Portuguese Army used horse cavalry in Angola and Mozambique in the 1960s and 70s ... with a very good success ratio compared to the heliborne and mechanized infantry units.

- the US Army's last horse mounted cavalry charge took place in 1942 in the Philippines when the 26th Cavalry charged Japanese forces on horseback and actually routed the Japanese giving us a several hour period to build up our forces on Bataan. The last horse cavalry in the US Army were not converted to armored/mechanized/heliborne infantry until 1955 when the US Constabulary was disbanded. We still maintain a horse mounted squadron attached to the 1st Cavalry Division HQ command for ceremonial/educational purposes as well as a smaller detachment assigned to the 3rd Infantry Regiment.

I also found a neat Osprey magazine issue which deals with this. Ill try and scan the article and I will post it."

"The nation was clothed with ample powers to maintain its own supremacy and life forever -- with its foundation upon the White Race, Christianity, and a Republican form of government. If this nation does not like a planet, revolve in orbit around this "trinity," the nation's purpose for existence will have ceased to exist and though its Union is preserved, it will exist only as a Dummy."  -- Thomas Jefferson

Long Endurance Horse Cavalry for border patrol operations and modern combat - by Ralph Zumbro

"This means, of course, that if we adopt horse mounted patrols on our borders, the wild mustangs just became a national asset. We’d also need to bring Icelandic horses and the Florida Cracker, and rebuild our national stud ranches, but it could be done fairly quickly, give us a capability that all other nations have lost ......."
