This excellent book focuses on the
functioning of the Irish Republican Army,
especially how it is structured, how it has
evolved and changed over a period of more
than 30 years.
Among the book's many strengths is its
assessment of the application of the IRA's
ideology in daily practice of revolutionary
war and politics, particularly against the
backdrop of the ongoing Northern Ireland
peace process.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The rebels are not for the easy life, can
see no need to compromise the truth or
nibble at justice. They are possessed with
righteousness. They are keepers of history's
legacy, the great ideal. Such an ideal
ensures the opposition of the centre, a
centre condemned by the rebels and their
history to future irrelevance. The
separatists would destroy the unity of the
nation - ....................
All say 'No' - no compromise
.....................'No surrender'
The armed struggle is always asymmetrical.
It is a war between the orthodox centre with
conventional assets, and the covert rebel
with few military tools but a luminous
vision. One can easily count the assets of
the centre, the state, the powerful: so many
votes or tanks or billions in credit, so
many exports or paramilitary police
................................ rebels are
invisible and ........................
There is no evidence until the guerrillas in
make-shift uniforms climb on captured tanks
for the photographers. Then the offices are
closed, the bureaucrats go home, and the
last plane takes out
.........................
Then the underground is inverted and the
dream realized, the will made real. Until
this moment almost all rebels look like
losers or at most distant winners. After
all, until the end, the rebel is
underground. No matter, the rebel knows."

-------------------------------------------------------------------
"Rebels, revolutionaries, ambitious
conspirators often come to power in the
turmoil of the times. Sometimes they
possess, as did the American colonies,
sufficient assets, often including an
appropriate terrain, to wage nearly
conventional war. Few rebels want a
protracted armed struggle - all want power.
Some find other means into the future, but
the faithful persist. Mostly the centre
kills these rebels. The idealists who have
misread history ............
Mostly small groups appear and disappear,
flashes of light not the core of a galaxy.
The risks of real rebellion are too high.
Revolution, as Mao said, is not a dinner
party, certainly not for the rebels. No
matter, no matter the risks even if
recognized, most rebels expect to win, turn
the dream into reality. The world is filled
with dreamers. Some dreams are just that,
dreams, nostalgia or fantasy; but some are
compelling and beyond compromise,
incandescent, insistent. And they have
appeal to those with grievance, possess then
a special life span without a due date."
(page 11)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The armed struggle is attractive only to
the driven and desperate. And such rebels
are effective only against a centre with
uneasy legitimacy but determination to
persist despite limited resources. Still,
the arena for the armed struggle is quite
broad................, broad because it is
the rebel who decides on matters of
legitimacy and capacity on the necessity to
act.
CONCLUSION
An armed struggle arises when the
unreconcilable rebel moulds a dream into a
means to power. The dream energizes the
struggle. Out of weakness the rebel must
shape a congenial environment underground
and from there wage war even while seeking
other vulnerabilities of the centre. This
very limited war, waged by various means and
out of strength of conviction, tends to be
protracted so that the will of the dreamers
will have the opportunity to erode the
determination and assets of the orthodox
centre.
The rebel usually loses, often quickly. At
times and for uncertain reasons, the armed
struggle may escalate and in fewer cases
victory can be achieved in conventional
battle as was the case at
