CANNABIS & LUCIFER
The Spiritual Implications of the Legalisation of Cannabis
by
Alan Morrison
At the present time there
are increasing calls for the legalisation of cannabis/marijuana -- otherwise
known as dope, pot, Mary Jane, weed, hash, ganga, laughing grass, etc. A number
of us have, for some time, predicted the legalisation of this psychotropic drug.
When the Daily Telegraph -- the UK's most conservative newspaper -- calls for
the legalisation of dope, as it did via a poll at the beginning of April 2000
(see the article on 4/4/00 in Electronic Telegraph on http://www.telegraph.co.uk
), you know that something leviathanlike is stirring. Even the Daily Mail held
a poll recently which gave overwhelming support to the idea of legalised
cannabis. Even the principal of a well-known evanjellycal theological college
has supported the idea of the legalisation of cannabis today!
The general theory is that the consumption of cannabis can no longer be said
to lead on to "harder" drugs such as cocaine or heroin, and that possession of
cannabis ought to be decriminalised as it is no longer really a crime. However,
the truth is that for many -- especially the more vulnerable and weaker members
of society -- the smoking or eating of cannabis is an addictive activity which
can easily form part of a chain of events involving other drugs.
But this aspect of cannabis-taking (as a harbinger of "harder" drugs) is
surely not the real issue. Although there is no doubt that
cannabis-taking is part of a wider drug culture, involving a search for greater
and greater "highs", there is something far more sinister about this drug which
never normally forms a part of the debate on the issue. I am referring here to
the fact that there are major global *spiritual* ramifications involved in the
consumption of cannabis.
Here we need to understand the fundamental importance of the global
developments which took place in the 1960s. Until the 1960s, smoking dope had
largely been confined to jazz musicians and hardcore beatniks who had been Jack
Kerouakified. But at that time, a new counter-culture was formed which opened up
the youth of that period to a massive infestation of demonic influence and
anti-Christian behaviour. Central to this was the use of hallucinogenic and
mind-altering drugs such as Marijuana, Cannabis resin, Lysergic Acid Dithylamide
(LSD), di-Methyl Tryptamine (DMT), Mescaline, Peyote and other fungal
concoctions.
The use of these substances on such a scale - which is still a vast growth
industry to this day - brought millions of young and impressionable people under
the sway of a number of influences which were to be of fundamental importance to
satanic strategy at this point in history:-
1) It enabled people to alter their consciousness at will and thereby enter
states in which they could more easily come into contact with evil spirits which
masquerade as benign beings who have come to assist in the birthing of the New
Age/New World Order (we have written extensively on this in other articles on
this website -- e.g. "The Ascended Masters").
2) The use of such drugs propagated the notion that 'ordinary' Christianity was
of a lower order than the rich mystical experiences which were possible through
such an alteration of consciousness. Eventually it was discovered that certain
meditation practices could bring about the same effects as the drugs, which had
merely paved the way for these 'deeper' religious experiences.
3) It compounded the concept of both Theosophy and Eastern religion, that one
can tap into the 'God within' through such activity.
4) It brought about a realisation of people-power through encouraging rebellion
against Biblically-rooted authority and morality, thus paving the way for the
sexual revolution and such 'democratic human rights' as abortion on demand.
5) The 1960s psychotropic drug culture perpetuated the notion that the
long-desired Golden Age of peace and justice could be established on the earth -
that it was possible, in the words of one psychologist who advocated such
developments, "to stay high forever and bring home the New Jerusalem, the Whole
Earth" [John Heider, 'Catharsis in Human Potential Encounter', Journal of
Humanistic Psychology, No.14, 1974. Quoted in John Rowan, Ordinary Ecstasy:
Humanistic Psychology in Action, (Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1976), p.103.]
Even at this time, the undercurrent feeling was that the movement was going
to bring about a massive global change to usher in the New Age. 'Acid-Rock' (LSD
drug influenced) groups such as the Grateful Dead, Country Joe and the Fish,
Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, Jefferson Airplane, and the Quicksilver
Messenger Service all reflected this movement in their lyrics, exercising a vast
influence over their audiences. The entire accent was on 'blowing your mind'.
One chart-topping song of 1967, entitled 'San Francisco', made the claim that
'All across the nation, there's a new generation, such a strange vibration...'.
And 'strange vibration' it was -- largely inclucated by the massive influx of
Cannabis use.
Some readers may recall seeing news-footage of a huge utopian-based
rock-music festival at Woodstock, in the U.S.A. in 1969, which brought the
surrounding area to a complete standstill for tens of miles. At this gathering,
more than a million people were swaying, trancelike, in the mists of marijuana,
holding marathon encounter-therapy groups, reading each other's astrological
birth charts and Tarot cards, listening to the hypnotic sounds of acid-rock
music, and receiving instruction in the practice of Kundalini Yoga, Vippasana
meditation and a host of other esoteric arts. The well-known haunting song
'Woodstock', written by the singer Joni Mitchell, was the anthem of this
festival; and the Neo-Gnostic intent behind it is clearly portrayed in the
lyrics:
"...Gonna camp out on the land and set my soul free. We are stardust
(billion year-old carbon) And we are golden (caught in the Devil's bargain) And
we've got to get ourselves back to the Garden".
The 'Garden' here is the Garden of Eden, which the occultist, alchemist,
magician and Gnostic will always seek to set up once more on the earth. Here we
have the primary difference between the polluted way of the Gnostic and the
sanctified Way of Christ. The Gnostic always tries to return to the conditions
of Eden, to create heaven on earth through his own collective strength. But the
Christian knows that a return to Eden would be a retrograde step, and so - in
patience and faith - he awaits the making of all things new by the grace of his
Creator.
The mystical and gnostic influences of the stoned-out 1960s moved from their
initial confinement within 'fringe' groups and esoteric organisations to a
burgeoning international respectability, and can today be observed in many areas
of establishment life. As the 'flower-children' of that period grew up, they
went on to take their place in society, spreading their doctrine as they went
and thereby influencing the policies of their various professional occupations.
For although they may have cut their hair and put on suits, they still continued
to engage in the 'mind-expanding' practices which had played such a part in
their formative years - a fact which has been well-documented in the book 'The
Aquarian Conspiracy: Personal and Social Transformation in the 1980s', by the
New Age researcher Marilyn Ferguson. [Marilyn Ferguson, The Aquarian Conspiracy:
Personal and Social Transformation in the 1980s, (Granada/Paladin, 1982),
494pp]. Not only that, but the children of the 1960s also went on to have
families, and these children have also been reared on marijuana, magic
mushrooms, mandalas and meditation. So, not only are the dope-smoking,
mind-expanding, acid-dropping flower people of the 1960s now positioned in
places of power in government, medicine, psychiatry, computing, education and
business; but their children are also now entering adulthood and taking their
places in the world. Two generations of the children of the New Age have now
come of age. As the New Age physicist, Dr. Fritjof Capra of Berkeley University,
has stated: "The social movements of the 1960s and 1970s represent the rising
culture, which is now ready for the passage to the solar age". [Fritjof Capra,
The Turning Point: Science, Society and the Rising Culture, Flamingo, 1982,
p.466]. The "solar age" is the age of the Sun-god, Lucifer the "lightbearer".
It is what people today call the "New Age" of Aquarius.
It is important for us to realise that the main interface between the
demonic realm and humanity lies in the sphere of the imagination, through the
use of mind-control. There is a thirst in the life-force of the demon for a
control of human affairs, manifesting itself at its mildest level through simple
manipulation of specific thought-patterns and behaviour; while at its most
severe, it seeks to work through complete control of the life of the human
creature. It is, therefore, necessary for appropriate opportunity to be provided
in order that the unseen forces of evil can work at their most efficient in the
human being. These footholds generally constitute such things as violent
thoughts and actions, extreme anti-social behaviour, sexual immorality,
compulsive drug-taking, sorcery, idolatry, and so on. This is precisely why the
Apostle Paul advised that we should not give an 'opportunity' or 'foothold'
(Greek: topos, 'place') to the devil through holding on to such extreme emotions
as anger (Eph.4:26-27). It is through their curiosity about, and experience of,
sinful phenomena that people become open to demonic interference, influence and
affliction; this culminates in actual 'possession' in extreme cases, where a
person deliberately and wilfully 'sells the soul' through yielding himself up to
psychic forces which he is unable to handle, e.g., through ritual magic, psychic
exploration, mediumship, repeated sexual depravity, extreme violence, and so on.
We are referring here to the unbeliever, who is, by nature, in bondage to Satan
(Acts 26:18; cf. Col.1:13). The Christian is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and,
although he can be sorely tested by Satan, he can never be in bondage to him
(Rom.6:14; 1 Jn.3:8-9). On the other hand, the natural man's essential depravity
makes him an easy and willing prey to the forces of darkness (Eph.2:2;
2Cor.4:3-4).
Because the demonic realm exists in another 'dimension' from that of the
human inhabitants of the earth -- coupled with the fact that it is also under a
degree of Divine restraint -- it is necessary for certain conditions to prevail
in order for its intentions to be carried out with maximum effectiveness. This
limitation is openly recognised amongst those controlled by demonic forces. One
'spirit guide' frankly reported to the person through whom it was being 'channelled':
"We are unable to commune with humans whose vibrational fields are distorted by
ego factors, emotional reactions, excessive conceptualisation, or past-future
orientation". [Ken Carey, The Starseed Transmissions, Harper, 1982, p.35].
What this means is that unless a person has begun to make some attempt to
"dissolve" their ego and open themselves up through consciousness-altering
techniques, the demonic realm will be restricted in its ability to communicate
with them. It is for this reason that one finds, in New Age circles, a tendency
to stress the inferiority of the rational mind and conceptualisation, urging
that it should be relinquished if one is to have truly effective communion with
the spiritual realm. To this end, cunning methods of encouraging us to alter our
normal level of consciousness and suspend our rationality have been devised by
the forces of darkness -- often in the interests of so-called 'self-improvement'
-- so that the person surrenders his or her mind to these forces without any
awareness of the fact and what it entails. Many different techniques are
recommended by the advocates of the New Age; however, they all fall under seven
main headings:
1. Meditation techniques, such as Kundalini, Vipassana, Tantrism, Zen, and
various forms of guided imagery.
2. Psychic exploration ('Channelling').
3. Psychotherapies -- especially the transpersonal and humanistic varieties, and
those which involve hypnosis.
4. Consciousness-altering drugs and other substances, such as Cannabis, LSD, and
hallucinogenic fungi.
5. Varieties of trance-inducing activities, such as Dervishism, visualisation,
chanting of repetitive phrases (mantras) and choruses, and the hypnotic
phenomenon known in certain professing Christian circles as being 'slain in the
spirit'.
6. Extreme asceticism, such as fasting, sleep-deprivation, etc.
7. 'Close encounters' with a Guru or Master.
The combination of these influences constitutes the foundation of what is
today called the New Consciousness -- a term referring to the world-view which
undergirds the many practices of the New Age Movement or Neo-Gnosticism. In
spite of the use of the word 'new' here, there is nothing new about them, for
they are the fulfilment of the secret doctrine of the esoteric groups which
Satan has preserved in the so-called "civilised" nations for centuries.
This manipulation of human consciousness can be observed in the worldwide
resurgence of mysticism and occult gnosis through a wide variety of gurus and
philosophies, which have attracted many millions of spiritually-experimenting
people into Satan's occult plan. Although there have long been pockets of people
around the world who advocated the alteration of consciousness, the manipulation
of consciousness on a grand scale began in earnest in the mid-1960s with the
advent of the hippie drug culture. Indeed, the 'psychedelic' 1960s proved to be
a watershed in this development, as things began to move from being the sole
province of the 'beard and caftan' brigade to that of the yuppie, businessman,
politician and white-coated professional. It is necessary for good communication
between the demonic realm and humanity that the 'inner life' or imaginal
capacity of a person should be 'expanded' to its maximum, thus creating an
openness to manipulation of the mind. This fact accounts for the huge growth in
recent decades of the use of 'mind-expanding' drugs and all the other techniques
which are being used to expand consciousness and create the illusion of realised
divinity. As one Neo-Gnostic psychologist rightly claimed more than fifteen
years ago that:
"The single major event forcing [the] development [of transpersonal
psychology] has been the widespread use and abuse of psychedelic or
mind-manifesting substances such as marijuana, LSD and mescaline... The
psychedelic drugs gave incontrovertible proof that altered states of
consciousness had reality and that paths toward transcendent experience
existed...We were hunting for ways to stay high forever and bring home the New
Jerusalem, the Whole Earth". [John Heider, ibid.].
The "psychedelic sixties" were, in fact, paving the way for the gathering
wave of global demonic manipulation which would come in succeeding decades. That
this was happening under the inspiration of demons can easily be shown (as we
have done in another article). At the same time, Eastern mysticism made a major
assault on the West by cashing in on this new transcendentalism. Such practices
have contributed to the manufacture of a 'New' Consciousness which is finely
tuned to the promptings of the demonic realm. It is because of these
developments today that there is the great need for a rational, discerning mind,
together with the Christian concept of objective reality -- all of which have
become subject to much disparagement in the ethos of the New Gnosticism. Over
twenty years ago, an international meeting attended by psychiatrists,
psychologists, theologians, physicians, mathematicians, physicists and
engineers, called 'The Interdisciplinary Conference on the Voluntary Control of
Internal States of Consciousness', stated in its official invitation: "We have
reached the point in history at which the exploration of 'internal states' has
become not only legitimate, but also a high-priority business of science".
[William Johnston, Silent Music: The Science of Meditation, (Collins, 1974),
p.23].
The 1960s and 1970s represented the grand harvest of the Neo-Gnostic revival
which had begun almost one hundred years earlier with the inception of the
Theosophical Society. During this time there was a drug-induced global outburst
of psychic activity which proved to be a watershed in the development of the New
Gnosticism. A new age of eclecticism had dawned when every individual could pick
and choose any components of any religious tradition or system and synthesise
them into a hybrid of his own making. Irenaeus of Lyon's observation of the
ancient Gnosticism, that "every day every one of them invents something new", is
equally applicable to the New Gnosticism.
So now a drug which played a great part in this massive societal transition
is now about to be legalised in the Western world. The arguments in opposition
to it have largely faded because they were based solely on cultural fears and
traditions rather than spiritual facts. One only has to look at a city such as
San Francisco or a country like the Netherlands to see how the widespread use
and acceptance of cannabis influences administrations to become humanistic in
the extreme, antichristian and opposed to every divine law. [An interesting note
here is that even the men to did our house removal from the Netherlands, when
asked whether they wanted a biscuit with their tea, requested if they could have
"spacecake" instead! "Spacecake" is a nickname for cake which has cannabis baked
in it.].
It is no coincidence that the Greek word most often translated as "sorcery" or "witchcraft" in the New Testament is pharmakeia (e.g. Gal.5:20; Acts 8:11; Rev.9:21; 18:23). It is from this word that pharmacology is derived -- the study of drug preparations. This is because drugs and sorcery have historically gone hand-in-hand. This can be seen classically in the life and work of the shaman (ethnic "medicine man"), who uses hallucinogenic drugs in order to enter an altered state of consciousness and prophesy. Today, such drugs as cannabis are making shamans out of every street-corner Harry who rolls a joint. This has massive implications for the spiritual life of humanity. Surely the widespread use and legalisation of cannabis is yet another part of the preparation for the coming Man of Sin who -- thanks to the efforts of cannabis legalisation campaigners -- will find a world far more receptive to the pharmakeia (sorceries) he will have to offer (Rev.18:23; 2 Thess.2:9).
