A Short Kommentary about "Wagon Dogs"

by Chaplain Joe Johnson

The term or label "Wagon Dog" or "Wagon Dogs" came into popular and common usage during the War Between The States. It is a very derogatory term to identify a "man" or group of "men" enlisted in the Army who consistently and habitually become sick or injured just prior to a battle. Such men would almost always, if not indeed always, fall back to the rear with the supply wagons anytime it looked like there might be a violent confrontation with the enemy. "Wagon Dogs" avoid konflict and fear the skirmish line. I have no doubt that many of these "Wagon Dogs" in actual fact were "sick with fear"; none the less their injuries and sicknesses were for the most part a well-crafted ploy and ruse to avoid going into battle. A "Wagon Dog" is a coward and a shirker, a "man" who is not willing to do his duty and stand shoulder to shoulder with his kinsmen and brothers facing the fire of their common enemies. Such a man is indeed worse than a dog, and his presence with the supply wagons dishonored the Army teamster who served in the wagons of the supply train. The Army teamsters and wagoneers were often exposed to enemy Cavalry raids and other danger. They did their duty in spite of the danger, knowing they were often exposed and under guarded; being a prime target for enemy Cavalry raids. On the other hand the "Wagon Dogs" sought the safety of the supply wagons only when being with the mass of Infantry and Cavalry at the front on the skirmish line became the less safe of the two positions to be in. As soon as the action was over and done with, the "Wagon Dogs" would recover from their feigned injuries and sicknesses and high tail it back to the safety of the greater numbers and superior firepower of the fighting part of the Army. They pretended to be something they were not, they pretended to be fighting men, they wore the uniform and marched in the ranks; but they did everything they could to avoid being in a real fight. They were "men" without honor or courage, they were "Wagon Dogs". YAHVAH helps us to avoid recruiting such "men", and to purge such "men" from our ranks.
