SELF-DEFENSE  AND  SURVIVAL  PREPAREDNESS  FOR  WOMEN

written by Susan Johnson

YHVH declares in the Bible that all of His people have been given the command and inalienable right to self-defence, and to defence of their homes, families and others who are being immorally attacked (which includes being raped).--
13: "You shall not murder. " (Exodus 20:13, HOLY BIBLE, NASB) (We, as Christians, are commanded not to murder; therefore, a logical continuation of that commandment is to preserve the lives of others by defending them from unjustifiable death, i.e. murder.)

2: "If the thief is caught while breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there will be no bloodguiltiness on his account." (Exodus 22:2, HOLY BIBLE, NASB) (*"Bloodguiltiness on his account" means that the occupant of the home in which the thief is breaking into is not guilty of murder if the occupant kills the thief.)

46-56: "When all the leaders of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith.  It was told Abimelech that all the leaders of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.  So Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand and cut down a branch from the trees, and lifted it and laid it on his shoulder. Then he said to the people who were with him, "What you have seen me do, hurry and do likewise."  All the people also cut down each one his branch and followed Abimelech, and put them on the inner chamber and set the inner chamber on fire over those inside, so that all the men of the tower of Shechem also died, about a thousand men and women.  Then Abimelech went to Thebez, and he camped against Thebez and captured it.  But there was a strong tower in the center of the city, and all the men and women with all the leaders of the city fled there and shut themselves in; and they went up on the roof of the tower.  So Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it, and approached the entrance of the tower to burn it with fire.  But a certain woman* threw an upper millstone on Abimelech's head, crushing his skull.  Then he called quickly to the young man, his armor bearer, and said to him, "Draw your sword and kill me, so that it will not be said of me, 'A woman slew him.'" So the young man pierced him through, and he died.  When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, each departed to his home.  Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he had done to his father in killing his seventy brothers." (Judges 9:46-56, HOLY BIBLE, NASB) (*This unnamed woman was instrumental in mortally wounding an enemy (Abimelech) who had attacked her city, Thebez, in Israel.  Abimelech was trying to kill her and the others in the tower when she threw the millstone on him.)

4:11-22 & 5:1, 24-27 "Now Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites, from the sons of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far away as the oak in Zaanannim, which is near Kedesh.  Then they told Sisera [general of Canaanite army] that Barak the son of Abinoam [an Israelite] had gone up to Mount Tabor.  Sisera called together all his chariots, nine hundred iron chariots, and all the people who were with him, from Harosheth-hagoyim to the river Kishon.  Deborah said to Barak, 'Arise! For this is the day in which the LORD (YHVH) has given Sisera into your hands; behold, the LORD has gone out before you.'  So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him.  The LORD routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled away on foot.  But Barak pursued the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth-hagoyim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; not even one was left.  Now Sisera fled away on foot to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.  Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, 'Turn aside, my master, turn aside to me! Do not be afraid.'  And he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug.  He said to her, 'Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.'  So she opened a bottle (a skin or leather bag) of milk and gave him a drink; then she covered him.  He said to her, 'Stand in the doorway of the tent, and it shall be if anyone comes and inquires of you, and says, "Is there anyone here?" that you shall say, "No."'  But Jael, Heber's wife, took a tent peg and seized a hammer in her hand, and went secretly to him and drove the peg into his temple, and it went through into the ground; for he was sound asleep and exhausted. So he died.  And behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him and said to him, 'Come, and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.'  And he entered with her, and behold Sisera was lying dead with the tent peg in his temple. . . . Then Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam sang on that day, saying, . . . 'Most blessed of women is Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite; most blessed is she of women in the tent.  He asked for water and she gave him milk; in a magnificent bowl she brought him curds.  She reached out her hand for the tent peg, and her right hand for the workmen's hammer.  Then she struck Sisera, she smashed his head; and she shattered and pierced his temple.  Between her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay; between her feet he bowed, he fell; where he bowed, there he fell dead.'" (Judges 4:11-22 & 5:1, 24-27, HOLY BIBLE, NASB) (Sisera, general of Jabin's army, had tyrannized ("mightily oppressed" in KJV) the Israelites for twenty years.  Jael, a Godly woman, killed Sisera when he attacked YAHVAH's people in battle.  Because of her action Jael was called "most blessed of women" in the song of Deborah and Barak, who were the anointed co-judges of Israel at the time of Jael.)

23-27: "If there is a girl who is a virgin engaged to a man, and another man finds her in the city and lies with her, then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city and you shall stone them to death; the girl, because she did not cry out in the city, and the man, because he has violated his neighbor's wife. Thus you shall purge the evil from among you.  But if in the field the man finds the girl who is engaged, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lies with her shall die.  But you shall do nothing to the girl; there is no sin in the girl worthy of death, for just as a man rises against his neighbor and murders him, so is this case.  When he found her in the field, the engaged girl cried out, but there was no one to save her*." (Deuteronomy 22:23-27, HOLY BIBLE, NASB) (*This indicates that we are responsible for saving the person who cries out when that person is being raped, the crying out indicating that the act is not consensual.)

Our u.S. founding fathers set down in writing our inalienable right to self-defence.  Article II of The Bill Of Rights, as provided in the First Ten Amendments to The Constitution Of The United States, effective December 15, 1791, reads--
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
